When children feel strong, capable, and supported, it shows—in their confidence, focus, and the way they carry themselves. Research consistently shows that healthy habits formed in childhood support emotional well-being, resilience, and physical strength.
As Amy Schwartz, Senior Director of Group Fitness at the JCC, explains, “Regular exercise for tweens and teens is crucial for physical, mental, and cognitive health.” Physical activity builds strength and endurance, increases energy, supports restful sleep, and gives children tools to manage stress. It also sharpens focus and memory, helping them feel steady and capable in school and everyday life.

At the Weinberg Park Heights JCC on the Goldsmith Campus, youth sports programs are designed to strengthen mind, body, and neshama. In Martial Arts, students develop coordination and discipline while learning gevurah—strength with restraint—alongside self-control and respect. Teen Girls Hip Hop blends physical activity with creativity and peer connection, fostering both community and personal growth.
Many offerings are available in single-gender formats, creating comfortable spaces where children and teens can try new things and grow in confidence.
Denard Smith, Director of Fitness at the Park Heights JCC, notes that strength training can begin at a young age when done properly. “With professional guidance and age-appropriate progression, children learn to move effectively and responsibly.”

“We design our programs with care,” says Aharona Gans. “They’re thoughtfully structured, and our staff takes the time to get to know each child. Safety isn’t just physical—it’s emotional. When children feel supported, real growth happens.”
