In 1889, Puccini saw the play La Tosca – written for actress Sarah Bernhardt by French playwright Victorien Sardou – and immediately wanted to turn it into an opera. However, complications slowed the process. Fortunately for music lovers, Puccini finally acquired the rights and Tosca – one of the most beloved operas in the entire repertoire – premiered in Rome in 1900. Yes, it’s a 20th century opera!

Whether or not you plan to attend The Met’s broadcast into cinemas on Nov 23 or on an encore date, join James Sokol to explore some of the magical moments and music from this gripping and gorgeous masterpiece! Video performance clips bring excitement and beauty in our discussion. Come for the songs; stay for the fun!
