Join us in giving a warm welcome to Kim Young, our new Human Resources Generalist! For those who take group fitness classes, Kim is already a familiar presence, having been a member and enthusiastic participant for years. Kim’s passion for fitness, her experience, and dedication to community make her the perfect addition to our JCC staff. Learn more about Kim in the brief interview below.

How did you come to your position at the JCC?
I originally saw the posting in December of 2022. I was transitioning from another position and happened to be at the J taking a class. I asked Surena if the position was still available and when she said yes, I submitted my resume, and I met with Jill that same week to discuss the position. And the rest, as they say, is history.

You are a current JCC member and take a lot of group fitness classes. Has the transition from member to employee been easier or different in some ways because you are familiar with the organization?
I think the transition from member to employee has been easier. I practically live at the JCC attending various classes, so I know many of the group fitness staff members. Now that I work here, I feel like I get the best of both worlds, my friends in class and the new friends I’m making as co-workers.

What are you looking forward to bringing to your new role?
Love of HR and working with people.

Describe your typical day.
Now that I have mastered the ability to make chai lattes at home, I start my day with a cup before heading into the office. I typically work for about an hour or two before I take a fitness class and then return to my office through the end of the workday.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am a spa and shoe junkie! If I’m not working out or at work, you will find me at a spa or shoe shopping.

Have you had any life-changing events that made you into the person you are today?
Nothing overtly ‘life-changing’. However, I do believe that we grow from every experience, interaction, job, etc. I know that in my case I am where I am supposed to be right now and the experiences that I’ve had in the past have prepared me to be exactly who and what I need to be for my new role at the JCC.

What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. To me it speaks volumes about kindness, sharing and taking care of each other. I love it so much that I almost always give it to new parents as a baby shower gift.
