Rabbi Joel H. Zaiman z”l established a legacy marked by intellectual rigor, compassionate leadership, and unwavering commitment to Jewish education and values. He was a transformative and visionary leader of Chizuk Amuno Congregation for over two decades, dedicating his rabbinate to the spiritual and communal growth of his congregation and the broader Jewish community.

He had a deep commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment, ensuring that Chizuk Amuno served as a spiritual home for Jews of all backgrounds. Rabbi Zaiman understood that Judaism thrives through community, education, and tikkun olam. One of his most significant contributions was expanding the educational programs associated with Chizuk Amuno and the synagogue’s schools, launching the Krieger Schechter Day School in 1981 and the Stulman Center for Adult Learning in 1996. Both became models of excellence in Jewish education. Rabbi Zaiman’s vision ensured that children and adults of all ages be imbued with Torah values, history, and a love of learning, laying the foundation for future generations of Jewish leaders.

Rabbi Zaiman also placed a strong emphasis on interfaith dialogue expressing that, “to understand Judaism in America and American Jewish responses, you have to understand Christianity.” A central figure in the nation’s Catholic-Jewish dialogue, Rabbi Zaiman partnered with Baltimore’s Cardinal William Keeler, the Vatican’s point person for interfaith dialogue in North America. Respectfully referring to each other as “Rabbi Joel” and Cardinal Bill,” the two men traveled on international missions together including stops in Eastern Europe, Rome, and Jerusalem. Rabbi Zaiman’s leadership in interfaith collaboration fostered a spirit of mutual understanding and respect, further solidifying his role as a bridge-builder in the greater Baltimore area.

Beyond the walls of Chizuk Amuno, Rabbi Zaiman was a respected voice in the Conservative movement and the broader Jewish world. His intellectual depth and eloquence made him a sought-after scholar and speaker. He tackled challenging theological and ethical questions, offering profound insights that inspired not only his congregation but also colleagues and students nationwide. Today, we remember not just his achievements but also the enduring impact of his work, which continues to shape the lives of countless individuals and families.
