When Bubbe Met Amy: Millennial Jewish Comedians

Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at 8:00 pm

With Jonathan Branfman
December 1, 8, 15, 22
Tuesdays, 8:00-9:00pm EST
In Partnership with the Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia & Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta’s Innovation and NextGen teams

Love Barbra Streisand and Fran Drescher?  Then come learn about the next generation of Jewish women comedians: Amy Schumer (of Inside Amy Schumer), Tiffany Haddish (of Black Mitzvah), Rachel Bloom (of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and Abby Jacobson & Ilana Glazer (of Broad City). While laughing out loud, you’ll also gain insight about how millennial Jews view Jewish identity, gender, sexuality, and race.

Jonathan Branfman researches Jewish media stardom at Cornell University. From Eddie Cantor to Barbra Streisand to the rap superstar Drake, Jonathan asks how Jewish stars perform race, gender, and sexuality in pop culture. His work on gender and sexuality has also included co-founding a holistic sex-ed program at the Ohio State University and publishing an LGBTQ children's book, which is now translated into 23 languages.

Part of The Wisdom Studio Series, a space to explore Judaism and Jewish culture as it evolves and develops on the page, on the screen, in the studio.
