Are American Jews and Israel Heading for Divorce?

Monday, October 5, 2020 at 8:00 pm

With Liel Leibovitz
October 5, 12, 19, 26
Mondays, 8:00-9:00pm EST
In Partnership with the Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia and Fueled by the Israel Insight Forum

Ask American Jews and Israelis to define their relationship, and you'd hear something that sounds a lot like a couple on the brink of divorce. Stateside, progressive Jews are feeling increasingly uncomfortable with Israel's right-wing government and its policies, while Israelis, in turn, have less and less patience for American Jews and their demands for religious pluralism. Liel Leibovitz, an Israeli-American journalist with roots in both communities, will shed light on the fissures tearing the world's two largest Jewish centers apart, and find surprising reasons to be hopeful not always reported in the press.

Liel Leibovitz is an editor at large for Tablet Magazine and the co-host of its popular podcast, Unorthodox. He is the author or co-author of several books, including, most recently, The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia: From Abraham to Zabar's and Everything in Between.

Part of The Wisdom Studio Series, a space to explore Judaism and Jewish culture as it evolves and develops on the page, on the screen, in the studio.
