About the Film: Ansis has simple dreams: to marry the free-spirited daughter of a local Jewish merchant and to pursue a career as an artist while supporting himself as a sign painter. These dreams are repeatedly swept away by the serial occupation of his home town, shifting from a Latvian dictatorship to Soviet occupation to Nazi conquest. Ansis struggles to remain neutral and unobtrusive as history takes its toll around him.
