Israel | 2016
Director: Maysaloun Hamoud
Hebrew & Arabic with English subtitles, 103 min.

This controversial Israeli drama (the female Palestinian director received death threats) focuses on the lives of three young Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv. They have chosen for different reasons--a secular lifestyle, freedom from homophobia, access to a university education--to live in this predominantly Jewish city despite an acute awareness of their outsider status. The film effectively tells their often powerful individual stories and ultimately becomes a strong portrayal of female bonding. Cited by the New York Times as "a perfect film for the moment," the director received a "best young talent" award at the Cannes Film Festival while two of the film's stars won Ophir Awards (Israel's Oscars) for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
