Overview

Whether they are beginners exploring acting for the first time, or more seasoned actors looking to gain deeper experience from trained professionals, children find dynamic experiences, grow self-confidence and feel the thrill of performing on stage.

Students develop imagination, concentration, character, professionalism, and technique, while strengthening command of their body and voice in this supportive environment grounded in Jewish values.

We are thrilled to offer a progression in musical theatre with training from youngest of performers, to our oldest and most devoted. Broadway Tots, CTPC Kids, CTPC Jr, CTPC Teens — there is plenty to choose from and for your budding star to grow!

Auditions are a part of our class process, and every child will receive a role in the production. The goal is to create a tight knit, well rounded, and ever-growing ensemble of actors, working together as a team rooted in values and purpose.

In addition to our theatre programming, we’ll also be offering acting classes and theatre jazz. These classes are a great way to continue your performer’s theatrical training.

A musical theatre class for our performing loving toddlers. CTPC’s Broadway TOTS will focus on the foundations of musical theatre in a fun, entertaining, and imaginative way. Every week, we begin every class with songs and games to train our tots about warming up in acting, voice, and dance. The last section of each class consists of learning a music and movement piece to age-appropriate Broadway tunes, to eventually create a showcase of our very own. Though we do not cast specific roles in our show, we hope that this class allows for our tots to aspire to the next big kid step, the year around CTPC Kids theatre program! This is an independent class from our grown-ups, but for the last class, we will have a final sharing showcase where we allow adults to watch and cheer us on.

If your child is a member of the Early Learning Center, they will be picked up from their classroom. Should they also be a late stay student, they will be brought back to their classroom for their typical dismissal. All non-late stay ELC students, and any other participants, will be dropped off and picked up in a later specified location.

CTPC mini is our new fall program for our Broadway Tot stars who want to continue their education in musical theatre. While the format of class will be similar to Broadway tots, we will begin to introduce higher and more intricate levels of training. In this session, they will learn how to move from one formation to another, work on conversing with another actor on stage when reciting lines, and will be asked to learn said lines before their final sharing. This is an independent class from our grown-ups, but for the last class, we will have a final sharing showcase where we allow adults to watch and cheer us on.

Please note that we highly recommend having taken at least one session of Broadway Tots before moving onto CTPC Mini. We do not do Early Learning Center pickups for this class.

CTPC Kids is the next step in musical theatre training, for ages 6-7.* In this level, we will combine the basic elements, with more intricate and detailed training for how to put together a full length musical. We begin with more complex musical theatre basics such as dancing and singing together as a group, counting music, choreography retention, and simplified blocking. CTPC Kids also delves into the exciting world of putting on a production also with basic lighting, costumes, props. During the production, the director will sit onstage to help direct our performers and therefore, to help set our youngest performers up for success! Every child signed up for CTPC Kids will receive a role based on their audition, past experience, level of commitment, and classroom behavior.

*Please note, any 6-year-old must have the prerequisite of Broadway Tots, unless approved by the director.

CTPC Jr is the next step in musical theatre training, for ages 8-11.* A more fast paced, yet welcoming environment, CTPC Jr is a continuation from CTPC Kids in which Jr programming also offers children to learn the ins and outs of putting on a full length musical. At this heightened level, stage blocking, choreography, and vocals are all more complex in execution. We also start to introduce the concept of character development, vocal techniques, and script analysis. Every child signed up for CTPC Jr will receive a role based on their audition, past experience, level of commitment, and classroom behavior. CTPC Jr along with CTPC Teen, will begin their session with preparatory musical theatre classes, go on a field trip, audition, and at the end of the session, perform in the mainstage production.

*Please note, any 8-year-old must have the prerequisite of CTPC Kids or speak with the Director in advance.

We are thrilled to offer a new segment of CTPC for our teens, allowing for our dedicated theatre stars to continue their training. For grades 7-10, this program will begin alongside CTPC Jr, but with more advanced preparatory and ensemble building theatre classes at the beginning of the session. They will also go on a field trip, audition for the show, and at the end of the session, perform in the mainstage musical. In the winter, we will release additional dates for exclusive theatre programming for this age group in the spring. Our students will then have the opportunity to rehearse for another, but smaller and more intimate production that will be performed in the Mornstein Performa. Throughout the year, these members will also be able to enroll in master class intensive opportunities, audition technique seminars, and the chance to master the performance experience.

Please note that this registration is for the fall/winter session only. Spring session dates and registration will be released in January.

For those who would like more one-on-one training, are new to acting, or want something in addition to CTPC Kids fall/winter sessions for CTPC, we are pleased to present an exploration into acting class for ages 6-8 years old. This class will work on the fundamentals of acting, while working to create their own piece of theatre all on their own. This class is a great warmup to our mainstage productions, but also another way to expand imaginations and just have fun creating. This class serves as a great introduction to improvisational theatre as well. This is a class separate from our grownups and for the last class, will have a final sharing to show families what they’ve been working on.

Get ready to laugh and to have some fun! Improvisation refers to the theatre that is created in the moment, and therefore is unplanned and does not have a script. Improv allows us to create characters, storyline, and laughs, all at the drop of a hat. It also helps widen our scope of imagination, how to think on our feet as actors, and how to work off of the dialogue of another on stage while staying ever present and creative. Our last class will act as a final sharing for our families to show what they’ve been working on!

A unique and intimate program exclusive for CTPC Teens, grades 7th through 10th! Led by our Director of Youth Arts Education, Adrienne Bergeron, this master class series will be taught by some of Baltimore’s finest musical theatre teaching artists, performers, and educators. Classes include audition prep, dance retention and choreography, stage makeup, and exploring the musical theatre voice. At the end of the month process, performers will get a chance to show off their talents and work to their families in a final showcase.

Testimonials

JCC and the drama team are my favorite part of the week. I love coming here – everyone is so nice, they are fun and silly like me… I really love it!

Adriana G.

The JCC youth arts program is phenomenal. The team helps students work through their fears, helping them to accomplish more than they thought possible. They build confidence and self esteem while encouraging them to act with and through kindness. It’s a wonderful experience.
