Tatiana Amirova, Live at The Gordon!

Odessa, Ukraine, singer-sensation Tatiana Amirova performs live at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts, Sunday, September 18, 2016, at 6:00pm. 

The performance, co-presented with The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Associated’s Baltimore-Odessa Partnership.

Gorgeous and gifted with an impassioned, hip, and sophisticated, soulful voice, Amirova gained national acclaim and admiration on The Voice, Ukraine, on which she competed as a finalist. 

A “unity of opposites,” Amirova is feminine, charming, and spontaneous on the one hand, mischievous and cunning on the other.  Her repertoire includes Jewish songs spiked with soul, funk and jazz.

The J Blog editorial team had an opportunity to correspond with Tatiana:

When did you begin performing?

I started performing when I was just a little girl. When I was three, I stepped onto the stage of Odessa’s music festival “Little Star” and won first place! Thanks to the high marks I received at that performance from the judges and the praise from my family, I understood, this was the only thing I wanted to do for the rest of my life!

You won multiple festivals including Miss Mini World, how was it to be the center of attention from such a young age?

It’s definitely a huge responsibility, and all my free time I spent practicing my vocals, piano, choreography.  So while my peers freely played in the yard or with their dolls, I was absolutely consumed. The contests and festivals left a huge impression on me. After every win or performance, I wanted another and another. I became dependent on the stage for its energy.

How would you describe your performance style and repertoire? 

I think what’s most unique is my combination of jazz harmony and the deep history of the Jewish people; a synthesis of melodies with national and traditional beats. I want to produce a “kosher rhythm,” and my repertoire is constantly renewing.

What are your long term goals for yourself and your music?

Like any artist, my style continues to evolve. I’d love to reach the top of my industry one day – from my dreams to my goals, from my goals to their realizations — one day! Most importantly, I always want my music to be an art, then a business venture. Otherwise, there won’t be any progress, any growth. That’s the way I like to live, it gives me a sense of responsibility and accomplishment – to produce a clean, light energy for my audience and listeners.

What role does Judaism play in your music?

I’m a spiritual person. Judaism has always had an answer to all of my life’s questions. It’s very important to me that the music I perform doesn’t go against my lifestyle or my ideals. I often think about how music can help a person connect to G-d and his tradition rather than separate them.

How do you feel about your Baltimore Performance?

For me, America represents the ideals and values I want to see in Ukraine. It’s a tremendous honor for me to perform in Baltimore, especially at a concert that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the partnership between Baltimore and my own native city in Ukraine — Odessa.

What can our audience expect on September 18?

I hope that my music and my performance will be associated with a joyous occasion in people’s lives. I’ll give my all to this performance to provide a positive energy and emotion, to help make the day extra special, and give the audience something new and interesting. I really can’t wait to meet you all.
