The Aquatics department at the JCC of Greater Baltimore is seeking a certified instructor for children ages 11 to 18 in its American Red Cross certification programs and aquatics camp programs.  This position will have assignments at both the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC and Camp Milldale in Reisterstown.

Responsibilities include:
• Serve as instructor-of-record for American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, First Aid, and Junior Lifeguarding classes;
• Assist in the development and implementation of a “summer-camp” style day-long program for pre-teens and teenagers (11 - 18)
• Lead or assist in the delivery of a standardized leadership Development curriculum developed by the American Red Cross;
• Participate as chaperone during off-site activities, including providing “safety supervision” as a lifeguard or designated “first-aider” when necessary;
• Fully participate in “camp-style” activities in a “camp counselor”-style role;
• Assist in administering in-service training for lifeguards and instructors;
• Assist in communication of rules and policies to both staff and customers;
• Defuse or manage problems with unruly or argumentative customers;
• Enforce the employment policies of the JCC, including dress codes, timesheet and timeclock policies; behavior and harassment policies;
• Maintain a level head at all times


Expected schedule:


  • This is expected to be a seasonal "salaried" position; weeks of at least 40 hours are expected, and weeks of substantially longer than 40 hours are common;
  • During the National Aquatic School program, classes will run for six consecutive "full" days;
  • During the Aquatic Leadership and Adventure Program, a typical schedule will involve pre-session preparation, and participation in "late stay" activities (approximately 8am - 6pm, M-F)
  • This position is expected to assist with a number of other "special activities" planned for the Aquatics Department during the Summer 2010 season; some EXTREMELY long days will be required;
  • Applicants should be available from as close to May 17 to as close to August 27 as possible, with no planned extended absences.
  • Must be reasonably available "on demand" to respond to emergencies and unexpected circumstances



Qualifications include:


    • Minimum age of 18
    • Certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor required
    • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required
    • Ability to perform rescue procedures/administer first aid on demand
    • Currently current certification by the State of Maryland as a Certified Pool Operator preferred
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard Managementcertification strongly preferred
    • American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) rating preferred
    • AT LEAST one year (or two program seasons) of previous experience as an instructor for advanced swimming lessons,
    • Schedule flexibility and availability
    • Good customer service skills
    • Able to work under a high level of stress
    • Able to work outdoors in adverse conditions for periods of 8-10 hours
