Returning Swimmers

Swimmers who participated in either the 2010-11 Winter Barracudas team or the 2011 Summer Barracudas DO NOT need to try out again.  Returning swimmers will be mailed registration forms, along with a preliminary Practice Group assignment.

Swimmers who wish to change practice groups (from the group assigned by the coaches) should contact the swim team coaches at 410.559.3533 or email swimteam@jcc.org.

New Swimmers

Swimmers who have already learned all four of the competitive strokes (Front Crawl, sometimes called "freestyle;" back crawl; breaststroke and butterfly) may try out for the team. Swimmers who have not yet learned the four competitive strokes are encouraged to participate in our Learn-to-Swim program.

Swimmers must also be able to dive; swimmers trying out for higher-level practice groups MUST be able to perform a shallow dive properly in order to register.

The team is open to members of the JCC ages 6 to 18 who are able to complete the following swimming skills tests:

Practice Groups

Junior Barracudas

Age Group 8 & Unders

The Junior Barracuda Swim Team is designed for the less advanced swimmer. Here the swimmers will learn the different techniques of Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle, as well as racing starts and flip-turns in a small instructor to swimmer ratio. The Junior Barracuda practice will be following a lesson plan which includes stretches, warm up, core instruction and a cool down. Each week will be dedicated to the development of a particular stroke. As we approach the meets our focus will be on coordinating all of the components needed to be successful. Graduating from this program will lead into the Barracuda Swim Team practices.
  • Practices are Tuesday/Thursday nights, 6:15-7:00 (pre-practice stretches/land exercise begins at 6:00pm)
  • Participants are invited, but not required, to participate in Mid-Atlantic League meets.
  • Participants are invited to participate in USA Swimming invitational meets appropriate for their age group (additional fees may apply.)
  • Fee: $500, includes USA Swimming Registration

Age Group 9-18 yrs old

Several of our swim team parents have requested a practice group that is more centered on “swimming for fitness” than “competitive swimming.” This group continues to work on the development of strokes and endurance, but focuses more on fun and less on skills for competition. Consequently, members of this group generally only participate in “at home” JCC League meets.
  • Practices are Monday & Wednesday nights, 6:15 – 7:00 (Pre-practice stretches/land exercise begins at 6:00pm)
  • Participants are invited to participate in HOME Mid-Atlantic League meets. (Additional fees for travelling to away meets may apply.)
  • Participants are invited to participate in USA Swimming invitational meets appropriate for their age group (additional fees may apply.)
  • Fee: $500, includes USA Swimming Registration

Barracudas

Members of the Barracudas team must have the ability and stamina to swim all four racing strokes. The focus is on perfecting the four competitive strokes, building endurance and increasing speed.

Endurance and interval training is introduced during practices.  This program incorporates different activities to increase stamina and development of each stroke. The swimmers will be expected to follow the plan, after instruction is given.

  • Swimmers trying out for the “Barracudas” practice group must be able to properly perform a shallow dive.
  • Participants are expected to attend at least two practices per week
    • Practices are 7 - 8pm, M-Th; Dryland excercises begin at 6:30pm
  • Participants are expected to participate in all Mid-Atlantic League swim meets and at least six USA Swimming meets throughout the year.
  • Participants are invited to participate in USA Swimming invitational meets appropriate for their age group (additional fees may apply.)
  • Fee: $600, includes USA Swimming Registration

Barracuda Gold

Barracuda Gold is the practice group for swimmers who view swimming as their “year-round sport.” Swimmers must try out and/or be invited by the coaches to participate in this group. Practices will emphasize endurance and strength development, and will have greater focus on the achievement of motivational time standards.

Participants are expected to attend three practices per week, and are invited to attend 4 weeknight practices if their schedule allows.

  • Swimmers trying out for the “Barracuda Gold” practice group must be able to properly perform a shallow dive.
  • Participants are expected to attend at least three practices per week, and are invited to attend all weeknight practices if their schedule allows.
    • Practices are 7 - 8:30pm, M-Th; dryland excercises begin at 6:30pm.
