It's 1942 and the Russians and Germans are fighting near a small seaside town in Southern Russia. Vadik, a street-smart youngster, is angry when his family takes in a Jewish boy whose parents have been deported by the Nazis. He is also ashamed of his father, whose injuries prevent him from fighting with the Russian army. But he soon learns what it means to be a real hero. This emotionally compelling story brilliantly captures the ability of children to continue on despite the horrors around them. Based on a true story.
