Experience the Magic of J Camps

Does your child like to play, explore, create, and swim? Then prepare for a J Camps summer to remember! The diversity and mix of this year’s J Camps’ offerings is incredible.

J Camps Senior Director Emily Stern puts it best, “We have something to fit the needs of every child, covering anything your child may be interested in.” And, J Camps runs 12 weeks, from Baltimore County Public School closing in June through the Friday before Labor Day weekend.

The variety of J Camp offerings begins for campers as young as two years of age (J Camps’ Noah’s Ark and Camp Ami programs), and runs through its Top Notch Teens (grades 7 & 8) and Counselor in Training (grades 9 & 10) programs.

Are you looking for a traditional outdoor summer camp experience for your child? Then J Day and J Day Jr. offer campers an incredible world of swim (free and instructional), nature exploration, arts and crafts, ropes course, ziplining, science, athletics, culinary arts, and Israeli culture.

Does your child like to participate in fun, athletic camp activities: play a variety of sports, play tennis, do karate? J Camps offers individual camp programs for each: Maccabi Sports Camp, Tennis Camp, and CSA Karate Camp.

J Camps also includes the ever-expanding Habimah Arts Camp, which is dedicated to working with young artists and performers in the visual and performing arts and culminates in a showcase in our state-of-the-art Gordon Center theater.

Perhaps your child wants to do something outside of the box?  If so, then check out the variety of J Camps’ STEM Plus programs, designed to introduce children to Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, plus more! STEM Plus programming is highly specialized and will get your camper thinking and moving in different ways! Our STEM Plus camp options for 2018 include Live It Up!, Drone Adventure Camp, Tiyul Adventure Day Camp (in partnership with The Pearlstone Center), Young Innovators @KSDS, LEGO Robotics, Circus Camp, and X-treme Science.

Our highly trained J Camps staff focuses on building and modeling camp community while guiding your camper as they explore their interests in a variety of camp options. Your J Campers will create bonds with new and old friends, participate in camp traditions, feel the Ruach (Spirit) and Kehillah (Community), and become a Mensch as they grow and challenge themselves throughout the summer.

We put the “Jewish in J Camps.” Mornings begin with a flagpole welcome, where both the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikva (the Israeli national anthem) are sung.  Each Friday campers experience the magic of Shabbat, led by Rabbi Dena Shaffer (“Rabbs”) of 4Front, through the lighting of Shabbat candles, singing, and making yummy S’More Challah – a J Camps favorite! All our camp programs are infused with Jewish values and each week campers gather to explore a specific Jewish value and participate in meaningful Jewish experiences and community service projects in partnership with the Jewish Volunteer Connection. We also invite camp families and friends to join us for an annual Family Shabbat Celebration (Friday June 13 - more information to follow).

With generous support from The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, J Camps is the only Jewish day camp in the area that hosts visiting Israeli Shlichim (counselors) who will work across our programs to enhance campers’ exposure to Israeli culture and values. Our Shlichim also program our annual Israel Day event, which begins with a visit from the Israeli Friendship Caravan and continues with the Shlichim turning camp into a mini-Israel, which this year will also include a celebration of Israel’s 70th birthday! Want to enhance your family’s knowledge of and connection to Israel even more? Then consider hosting one of these incredible young women for a few weeks this summer! Contact jcamps@jcc.org for more information.

Stacy Deems, Assistant Director of J Camps, doesn’t hide her excitement about her new role and the start of camp. “I can’t wait to get out of the camp office this summer and really see J Camps in action!  I am excited to see the magic of the camp from a totally different viewpoint than I have the past 4 years, and to truly get to know our kids, not only by name, but by face and personality as well!  This is how we build community and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

If you haven’t already done so, apply for J Camps today!
