Keeping it Real

Singer/songwriter Cris Jacobs is the former front-man for the legendary Baltimore band The Bridge, a roots rock band. He will be performing live at the Gordon Center Saturday, November 5 with his solo band, following a set by Amy Helm & the Handsome Strangers.

Cris is doing a deep dive with his music and lyricism these days, “looking for more meaning and emotionality to come through in my songwriting, and infusing my songs with greater relevance,” he says.

If you know Cris’s roots, you might be expecting an eclectic set of blues, country, rock, and bluegrass November 5, but “it will be all those things but not one,” he says.  “I love so many different kinds of music – I can’t say I want to be blues, or rock, or bluegrass alone. I aspire to write something of substance, as opposed to when I was a singer and just wanted...

Sheldon Low: Inspiring Connections

Don’t miss Sheldon at the JCC Community Block Party on Sunday, June 5, 2016.
The Sheldon Low Concert was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Since the start of his Jewish music career, Sheldon Low has infused Jewish song, spirit, and religion into rousing rock and roll rhythms. He has released four albums, two of which – It’s All Challah To Me and Look at Me -- have been widely distributed by PJ Library.

“Judaism has so much to offer in terms of music and spiritual ground. It’s a great teaching tool, too,” he says, “but the packaging can be outdated.”

“Judaism has always been evolving, the traditions are moving.  I am trying to be another link in the long history of keeping Judaism alive, resonant, joyous, and inclusive.”  Personally, Low enjoys all music, but loves to use rock and pop music as his medium for...
