Coming Summer 2010!

Baltimore JCC Summer
Aquatic Leadership Adventure Programs
  • Programs for swimmers ages 11 - 18
  • Sessions are 2 weeks long
  • Full-day program (8:30am - 4:30pm)
  • "Late Stay" activities available though Barracudas Swim Team
  • Based out of the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC and Shapiro Recreation Park
  • Lunch each day included in camp fees!

Campers must pass a swim test in order to register for any of our Aquatic Summer Camp Programs.  These programs are intended for experienced swimmers.  (Completion of at least American Red Cross Level 4 or above is recommended.)  While there will be some "stroke clinic" work during the program, swimming instruction is NOT the main purpose of this camp.

Sessions

  • Session 0: June 21 - July 2 (F.L.O.A.T. Program participants skills development session)
  • Session 1: July 5 - July 16 (M-F); All Programs
  • Session 2: July 19 - July 30 (M-F); All Programs
  • Competition Break: August 2 - August 13
    • During this period, the US Lifeguard Association traditionally holds its Mid-Atlantic Junior Lifeguarding Competition.  If a group of participants qualifies, we are planning to travel to this competition.
  • Session 3: August 16 - 27 (M-F)
    • Dates and times are subject to change, based on local school schedules

 Aquatic Adventure Camp
(For Swimmers ages 11 - 14)
Swimming for fitness is just a small part of this jam-packed two-week camp that will also include skill development in boating, outdoor exploration, and communication systems used in, on, around and under water.  Participants are sure to come out of this experience with increased self-confidence and a greater respect for the environment.

The Aquatic Adventure Camp Program Includes:

  • Boating skills, including canoeing, kayaking, and basic boat construction
  • Swimming endurance training and coaching in competitive swimming skills;
  • Competitive water-based sports, such as wetball (water polo), water hockey and synchronized swimming
  • Introduction to underwater exploration skills, such as snorkeling and SCUBA;
  • Practical environmental education, including weather observation, identification of water-based plants and animals, "no-trace/reduced trace" camping/portaging philosophy, and practical study of tides and currents;
  •  Two-week, four-week, and six-week programs are available. Fee for two weeks is $650 for JCC Members, $725 for Non-Members, which includes daily lunch and travel for special programs. Contact Bill Kirkner at 410-356-5200 x318 or bkirkner@jcc.org for more details.

Are you done with “kiddie camp,” but you still look forward to the friendships and adventures that summer camp brings?

Are you looking for something to do this summer that will challenge you physically and mentally; and will help you prepare for the challenges of college?

Are you the camper who spent all of their time at the pool or in the boats at the lake? Or would spend your whole summer at the beach (if you could?)

If so, we’re looking for you to join the crew of the 2010 AQUATIC LEADERSHIP ADVENTURE PROGRAM.

Two-week, four-week, and six-week programs are available. Fee for two weeks is $650 for JCC Members, $725 for Non-Members, which includes daily lunch and travel for special programs.

Contact Bill Kirkner at 410-356-5200 x318 or bkirkner@jcc.org for more details.

F.L.O.A.T. Program ("For Leadership of Aquatics" Training Program)
(For Swimmers ages 15 & up; interview and application required)

Camp has its C.I.T. Program; Aquatics has the F.L.O.A.T. Program.

Gain the experience and certifications needed to gain employment with top-level Aquatics programs.  Participants will get advanced training and certification in Aquatics-related disciplines while providing instruction and leadership to the crews in their care.

This is a six-week program (June 21 - July 30); participants must commit to being available for the entire length of the program.  Selected participants will be eligible for a greatly reduced rate on camp fees, and may be eligible for community service hours.

The JCC of Greater Baltimore has applied for a grant which would significantly increase the scope of this program.  Final details will therefore not be available until mid-February, 2010.  Campers who are interested in this program should submit a deposit for the "Aquatic Leadership Camp," and should submit a letter of interest (from the camper) indicating why they are interested in joining the JCC Aquatic Staff as a "F.L.O.A.T.-er."

Contact Bill Kirkner at 410-356-5200 x318 or bkirkner@jcc.org for more details.
