Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

New! Updated 2009 Program!

Each year the American Red Cross teaches more than 2 million children and adults to swim. Red Cross Water Safety Instructors are in demand throughout the country and certification is recognized nationwide, so you can work wherever you go.

As a Water Safety Instructor you will be able to teach: Here are just a few of the many reasons to get certified as a Water Safety Instructor and join our winning team:
  • Have fun working outside with your friends and peers

  • Earn money, or join a volunteer team, while teaching people to swim
  • Gain the respect of your peers

  • Teach skills that may save a life

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 16 years of age by the last scheduled session of the instructor course;
  • Successfully complete the Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) course included with the WSI class; hold a FIT certificate issued within the past 12 months; or have a current Health and Safety Services Instructor Authorization; and
  • Successfully complete the precourse session

Fee: $350/ Non-Members: $400

Pre-Water Safety Instructor (WSI)  Stroke & Skills Clinic

This version of the Red Cross Level 5 Learn-to-Swim class reviews the six basic swimming strokes, as well as starts, turns, and dives that are used in the Water Safety Instructor course.
This class will not result in certification; it is intended to prepare candidates for the Water Safety Instructor Pre-course.

Fee: $90/M; $125/NM
