Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
National Swimming Pool Foundation®
Certified Pool Operator (CPO)® Course
Certified Pool /Spa Operator® (CPO®) certification courses are designed to provide individuals with the basic knowledge, techniques, and skills of pool and spa operations. The Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification program has delivered more training than any other program in the pool and spa industry since 1972, resulting in more than 200,000 successful CPO® certifications in 44 countries. The CPO® certification program is widely accepted by health departments. This course uses the 2009 Edition of the NSPF® Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook, which has been updated to include the most current information available including updated standards from the United States Centers for Disease Control for post-contamination pool disinfection and the new federal anti-suction entrapment regulations.
- All participants must be 16 years of age in order to participate in the course and be issued certification.
- This is a State of Maryland approved certification course. There is also reciprocity with many jurisdictions in Virginia, West Virginia, and D.C. Depending on the jurisdiction where certification is required, it may be possible to complete all local certification requirements simply by taking the course; however, the local Health Department may require that a "local" exam be taken at their specified location. Please contact us for specific jurisdictional information. Some county Health Departments charge a fee to obtain the County license. This fee IS NOT included. These fees are created by and payable to the local jurisdiction.
- Baltimore County charges a $25 fee and requires an original signed application form to receive the county license. To save processing time, we will file completed applications for successful students at the same time that we submit our roster with class results. Please bring a check in the amount of $25 made out to “Baltimore County, Maryland” along with your completed form to the last day of class. Download a Baltimore County Pool Operator Application.
We understand that there are many demands on your time, so training is now available in several convenient formats:
Classroom CPO® Certification
A two-day class that covers 14-16 hours of information from NSPF® Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook (provided) and local codes taught by an NSPF Instructor. This dynamic setting offers direct interaction with an instructor and fellow students. Pass the open book exam and earn CPO® certification.
Sometimes, it can be difficult to get away for two days of training, or the times that classes are offered just aren't convenient for your schedule. The National Swimming Pool Foundation offers a great two-part program that allows the student to complete half of the class online (Pool Operator Primer) and attend one day of classroom work (Pool Operator Fusion) which includes local regulations and the course final exam. These courses can be purchased together to complete your Certified Pool Operator certification, or independently, based on the needs of the student and your facility.
In order to complete the Certified Pool Operator® program and receive certification, a blended learning student must complete BOTH the Pool Operator Primer online course AND the Pool Operator Fusion classroom program.
If full certification is not required, the Pool Operator Primer™ online class provides an excellent background in general pool operations and can be accessed "on demand" through the ePro Academy Online Training Center.
Pool Operator Primer™
This online training program can be the first step to earning CPO® Certification or it can be an excellent stand-alone education in the fundamentals of pool operations. This online curriculum follows the 18 chapters in the NSPF® Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook, which is provided. Students have access to the Pool Operator Primer™ online course for six month period, which gives them the opportunity to review the material many times.
Successful completion of the Pool Operator Primer™ earns a Record of Completion. If you choose to pursue the CPO® Certification, you must enroll in a Pool Operator Fusion™ class within six months of completing the Pool Operator Primer™.
Pool Operator Fusion ™
This course is an economical and convenient way to achieve CPO® certification. This one-day class is offered by NSPF Instructors and is often the second day of the two-day Classroom CPO® certification course. Students must present a Pool Operator Primer™ Record of Completion and successfully complete a Pool Operator Fusion™ class to earn CPO® certification.
